Background
Money Matters, is a charitable community money advice
centre incorporated under the companies Act 1985 as a company
limited by guarantee ( Company No. 219693 - Charity No SC 017868).
It is based at shopfront premises 986/988 Govan Road, Glasgow,
Scotland (see map). The project was
established in 1990 to provide a range of money advice services
such as welfare benefits, debt and housing rights.
Its 11 years in operation and the reputation it has built during
that time with clients, statutory organisations and creditors,
underpins its ability to bring in residents with financial problems
who might otherwise be reluctant sharing them.
Mission & Objectives
The overall objective of Money Matters is, to relieve
poverty and advance the education of the Govan community and
its surrounding areas in all matters relating to management
of personal finances. The purpose of Money Matters is not simply
to help individuals to address specific debt issues, but to
enable them to tackle the other contributing problems that have
an impact on the individual's physical and mental health as
well as on their families and personal relationships.
Money Matters works with individuals by encouraging them
to address issues such as relationship breakdowns, drug addiction,
social exclusion, long term unemployment and alcohol abuse.
Therefore, enabling them to take greater control of their lives.
Money Matters has identified the following 6 principal aims
which it believes will improve the economic and social well-
being of the residents of Greater Govan and surrounding areas:
1- To increase household income of clients from within Greater
Govan and the surrounding areas.
2- To reduce poverty and improve the quality of life of the
residents of Greater Govan and surrounding areas.
3- To improve access to information and advice
4- To improve health and reduce individual isolation.
5- To increase individual self-confidence and improve educational
attainment.
6- To adopt a preventative and multi-agency approach to problems.

In the light of the overall aim of the project, Money
Matters delivers services in the following areas:
1- Money and Debt Advice Services
2- Welfare Rights, Advice and Representation
3- Jointly working with Mental Health projects
4- Joint work with Health education projects
5- Working with Workless Households
6- Jointly working with Drug, Alcohol and Dependency Problems
7- Child poverty
8- New Deal Issues and Implications

Staff & Structure
Currently, Money Matters' staff
team has six members: - A project manager, two money advice
workers, one secretary and two money advice volunteers.
The legal status for Money Matters is currently that of a company
limited by guarantee incorporated under the UK's companies Act
1985 ( Company No. 219693 ). It is managed by a voluntary
board of directors. The day to day management is the remit
of the project manager in co-operation with the rest of staff.
